Updated: Nov 8

You may come to therapy believing something is wrong with you when you are experiencing anxiety. It can be a really difficult place to be, a scary place, full of "what ifs" and intrusive thoughts. Not only your mind but also your body feels anxiety; you could question where to start to grasp what is happening with you.

While everyone can be anxious for various reasons from time to time, people usually seek counselling support when they feel that their anxious thoughts or state is beginning to impact on their health, relationships or life in general.

So how can counselling help you ?

  1. Safe Space for Expression:

Provide a therapeutic relationship and a safe environment for you to be yourself and express your true feelings without prejudice or judgement

  2. Identifying Triggers:

A counsellor can  help you recognise specific triggers of your anxiety, leading to greater awareness and understanding

  3. Create a holding space for you to work through your issues. It can also provide a new lens through which you can begin to view your issues from a different, but healthier perspective

  4.  Addressing underlying issues:

A counselor can help you address issues that may be contributing to your anxiety, such as past trauma or relationship problems

  5. Coping Strategies:

Counselling can help you discover practical tools to help manage anxiety symptoms effectively

  6. Behavioural Techniques:

Through approaches like exposure therapy, you can gradually face your fears in a supportive setting, reducing avoidance behaviours

  7. Emotional Support: Counsellor can provide emotional support, helping you feel heard, understood and less isolated with your problems

  8. Goal Setting:

A counsellor can assist you in setting achievable goals, which can enhance motivation and provide a sense of direction

  9. Building resilience:

Counselling fosters personal growth and resilience, equipping you with tools to handle anxiety in the long run

  10. Helping you change your relationship with anxiety - by finding out what role does anxiety plays in your life and what is it trying to protect you from. Getting to know the answers to these questions can help you develop a healthier relationship with anxiety which is incredibly powerful and healing.
